What Premarital Coaching Covers, and Why Couples Start Before the Wedding

Engaged couples spend an enormous amount of energy on the wedding day itself, the flowers, the seating chart, the song for the first dance, and comparatively little on the fifty years that come after it. Premarital coaching exists to close that gap before the vows, not after the first real fight.

Why couples do this before the wedding, not after

We say it plainly to every couple who asks: an ounce of prevention is worth far more than a pound of repair after the fact. It's easier, and a lot less painful, to build honest habits before a marriage than to fix broken ones once resentment has had a few years to settle in. Couples who do premarital work aren't the ones with obvious problems. Often they're the ones who care enough about getting it right to ask hard questions while the relationship is still calm.

What the six sessions actually cover

Our premarital class runs six sessions, structured but conversational, not a lecture. A good amount of the early sessions center on a simple question most couples have never actually sat down and answered together: what is a Christian marriage, really, and are you both building toward the same thing. We frame it as seeking holiness before happiness, because a marriage aimed only at feeling good tends to struggle the first time things stop feeling good, and every marriage eventually has a season like that.

From there, sessions work through the topics that quietly sink marriages when they go unspoken:

  • Communication, and the difference between talking and actually hearing each other
  • Conflict, and building a way to disagree that doesn't leave lasting damage
  • Finances, expectations, and who handles what
  • Roles at home, and where each of you learned your assumptions about marriage
  • Family of origin, and what you're each carrying in from how you grew up
  • Intimacy and connection, discussed honestly and without embarrassment

Nobody is trying to catch you doing marriage wrong. The goal is to get real answers on the table while you still have the calm and the time to work through them together.

What if one of you is more hesitant than the other

It happens often, one partner is eager to book and the other is dragging their feet, usually because premarital coaching sounds like a test they might fail. It isn't. There's no pass or fail here, no report handed to your officiant, no grade attached to how well you communicate on day one. The hesitant partner almost always relaxes within the first session once they realize the room isn't there to judge them. If anything, couples tend to leave more confident in each other, not less, because they've now had the hard conversations on purpose instead of by accident.

It's also fine if your engagement is short, your families live far apart, or one of you is newer to faith than the other. We've worked with couples in every version of that situation, and the six sessions adjust to where you both actually are rather than assuming a starting point neither of you has.

What it costs and how long it takes

Sessions are $125 each, about an hour, whether it's the two of you or just one partner attending a particular week. We don't process insurance claims for this or any of our coaching. Most couples complete the full six session course in a couple of months, timed around wedding planning rather than competing with it.

What couples usually say afterward

The most common comment we hear isn't "that fixed a problem." It's some version of "I didn't know that about them," said by someone who's known their partner for years. Premarital coaching has a way of surfacing things gently, in a room built for the conversation, instead of letting them surface for the first time during an argument about something else entirely six months into the marriage.

It's also worth saying who this isn't for. This isn't only for couples who sense trouble ahead. Some of our steadiest, most obviously compatible couples have gotten the most out of these six sessions, simply because they walked in willing to be honest rather than walking in defensive.
